The history of the 212 area code

How 212 went from New York City's first area code in 1947 to Manhattan's most wanted number, and why it is hard to get one today.

One of the original area codes

In 1947 AT&T and the Bell System laid out the first area codes for what became the North American Numbering Plan: 86 codes for the United States and Canada. New York City got 212.

The choice was practical. On a rotary phone each digit is a run of clicks: a 2 is two clicks and a 1 is one, so 212 took just five. The busiest places got the quickest codes to dial: New York 212, Los Angeles 213, Chicago 312 and Detroit 313.

From five boroughs to Manhattan

For almost forty years 212 covered all five boroughs. In 1984 Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island moved to the new 718 area code. In 1992 the Bronx moved to 718 as well, and 212 became Manhattan's own code.

Overlays: 917, 646 and 332

917 arrived in 1992, first for cell phones and pagers across the city. As Manhattan ran out of 212 numbers, 646 was added on top of 212 in 1999, so new lines in the same buildings started getting 646 numbers. 332 followed in 2017.

Overlays also made ten-digit dialing the rule for local calls: a neighbor across the hall might have a different area code.

Why 212 became a status symbol

Once new lines were getting 646, a 212 number became a sign that a business or a household had been in Manhattan for a while. A 1998 episode of Seinfeld turned it into a joke: Elaine is assigned a new 646 number and spends the episode trying to get a 212 back.

Businesses still pick 212 for the same reason. It says Manhattan, and it says established, before anyone picks up.

Getting a 212 number today

Carriers give new Manhattan lines whatever numbers they have, which today almost always means 646, 917 or 332. A 212 number becomes available only when someone gives one up, so the dependable way to get one is to buy an existing number and transfer it to your carrier.

That is what every number on this site is: a 212 number for sale from Exclusive Digits, ready to transfer to the carrier you use.
